At least 24 policemen, including an officer-in-charge, were injured in Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi in clashes between the Jamaat-Shibir activists and the police on Monday, report agencies.

In Dhaka, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Motijheel Police Station and an inspector (investigation), were injured in a clash between activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and police near City Centre at Motijheel on the day.

Witnesses said police intercepted a sudden procession that Jamaat activists brought out from Fakirapol intersection at 10.00am.

As the Jamaat activists swooped on the Motijheel Police Station, police resisted them triggering the clash.

Hedayetuzzaman, OC of Motijheel Police Station, said Jamaat men vandalised at least 50 vehicles and also torched a microbus and a private car during the clash.

Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) members once again swooped on law enforcers in Chittagong city and elsewhere in the district on Monday.

More than 20 people including 12 police personnel were injured and over 14 Jamaat-Shibir men including its Banskhali upazila unit Ameer Jahirul Islam were detained during clashes at Chambal Bazar under Banskhali upazila of the district.

The Jamaat-Shibir activists hurled brickbats on police at Chambal Bazar of Banskhali upazila at 12 pm when police halted a procession of Islami Chhatra Shibir, that was brought out demanding release of their party leaders who are facing the war crimes trials.

Mohammad Iltut Mish, additional superintendent of police (south) said at least 10 police personnel were injured during the attack by Jammat- Shibir men. They are undergoing treatment at Banskhali health complex. Police detained six persons in connection with the incident, he added.

Banskhali thana Jammat leader Maolana Ismail Hossain claimed that at least 20 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were injured and police detained 14 leaders and activists from different areas of the upazila.

Meanwhile, a group of Shibir activists gathered at the port city's BRTC intersection around 10 am on Monday and suddenly hurled brickbats at police, Kotwali thana police said. Police said two constables - Masud Karim and Jamal were injured and hospitalised.

At least 15 people were injured when activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, clashed with police near the campus of Rajshahi University.

SM Abdus Sobhan, Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station, said the Shibir activists took out a procession around 10 am on Monday demanding release of Jamaat-e-Islami stalwarts now standing trial at the two international crimes tribunals.

Traffic on the busy Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway was disrupted for nearly 30 minutes when the agitators set up road blocks in the Binodpur area and hurled brickbats at the police when they tried to take control, Sobhan said.

The Shibir activists also exploded at least five handmade bombs, he said. Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

He said two policemen were critically injured in the clashes. They were undergoing treatment at hospital.
