It is indeed worrisome to know that Nipah virus has already claimed eight valuable lives. We have to be alert as the virus infects people when they drink raw date juice and then it pass on to other people through touch and contact of the infected people. It is a cause of public health concern in Bangladesh. I love date juice but after hearing its probable deadly consequences, I have little thirst for date juice anymore.
In rural areas in our country, it is a common practice of drinking raw date or palm juice in the morning but the recent break out of Nipah virus will make people scared. I hope the government and media will step up their collective effort to create awareness among common people about the deadly virus and its fatal consequences. Affected person experiences fever, seizure and altered mental state. Death rate of infected people is nearly 80 per cent which is really alarming.
It has been found one half of recognised Nipah case patients in our country developed their disease following person to person transmission of the virus. So, Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) suggests drinking juice after boiling, having molasses and washing hands with soap after caring patients. We should not forget that prevention is always better thsn cure.
